Medicine allowance

Lena Berg, social advisor

In general, you will be eligible to receive an allowance if the annual cost of your eligible medicine exceeds DKK 520. This period of one year does not follow the calendar year. The period starts the first time you buy the medicine concerned. The allowance is calculated as follows (summer 2004):

  • If the cost exceeds DKK 520, you will receive an allowance of 50% on the part of the cost between DKK 520 and DKK 1,260.
  • If the cost is between DKK 1,260 and DKK 2,950, you will receive an allowance of 75%.
  • If the cost exceeds DKK 2,950, you will receive an allowance of 85%.

If you are chronically ill and your expenditure on medicine exceeds DKK 19,567 before the ordinary allowance, you can apply via your doctor for a "chronic sufferer allowance", which will cover your costs in excess of DKK 3,805 per year. If you are retired, you can apply for a medicine allowance if your are not well off.
