How to use therapy lessons practically everyday?

I have read about Psychotherapy, especially Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and its value in treating depression.

My question is how does one use the lessons and the analyses in daily life?

Thanks,

Hi!
I begin by explaining that I'm certainly not a psychiatrist. Infact, my knowledge of basic biology/medical science is limited to the basic biology courses offered in high school.
Nevertheless, I can offer you a layman's perspective on the value of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) in treating depression, having been through it myself. I have found it to be particularly effective. From the sessions (ongoing)that I've had so far with my doctor, I've found that the treatment is initially concerned with identifying damaging thought patterns that are likely to lead to a depressive episode. Subsequently,a conscious effort must be made to replace these negative thoughts with more positive and constructive ones. From what I've seen so far, it teaches one to question preconceived notions and come to a conclusion regarding whether thay are infact legitimate.
I might mention that one of the exercises that I was asked to do was to maintain a 'daily thought diary', a detailed account of prominent moods and feelings along with the associated emotions. Subsequently, i was asked to add another column which listed constructive, well reasoned thoughts that would help me to best conquer the situation/emotion.I found this particularly useful. This way, atleast one confronts ones negative emotions at some point in the day and hopefully, eventually this becomes only natural.
Hope I've helped. All the best!
